George The Poet isn't just a stage name for George Mpanga – he really is a poet. He recites his poetry to music, and has been embraced by the UK urban scene, but it took a few years for him to sign a record deal, perhaps because he's hard to classify. i'll be interested to see how Island promote an artist whose output is so different to what they normally have to work with. Have any other major labels signed a poet? Some of his work is a bit too deep and meaningful for me, but I enjoy his more light-hearted and witty poems such as YOLO, which begins "Millions of people in the last six months, just recently discovered you only live once."
