I was surprised recently to see Saint Motel’s mildly catchy single My Type at no.34 in the UK chart. It might not seem like a hugely impressive position, but it’s a lot better than what most indie acts achieve – even the really popular ones rarely make an appearance on the singles chart. Securing a big sync deal is one of the few ways to subvert this pattern, and Saint Motel were in luck when Phones 4U chose My Type for their recent time travel-themed TV ad. It was the second most Shazamed advert in the UK last week. Although Saint Motel are from Los Angeles, after five years releasing music independently in the US, they’re now with British label Parlophone. What they release next will determine whether they go home a one-small-hit wonder or a true success story.
