Frances is another young female artist who doesn’t fit the mould, but as with Alessia, that’s exactly why I think she has a chance of success. She has recently signed a deal with one of the UK’s most respected major labels, but will first release an EP via indie label Communion. Frances’ music is all about the vocals, with simple songs that are clearly aiming for the holy grail of the Radio 1/Radio 2 crossover market. Of course, there’s also a risk there that neither will get on board, and commercial stations won’t feel it’s chart-friendly enough for them. Frances’ new single Grow is pleasant and promising, but she’ll still need something more attention-grabbing to make her mark in a competitive time for singer-songwriters. I thought the sweet, folky sound of her earlier track Coming Up For Air was more interesting but again not worthy of great excitement. However, her talent and the team behind her ensure I’ll be keeping an eye on her anyway.
