Released: 7th August
Writers: Hailee Steinfeld, Mattias Larsson, Robin Fredriksson, Oscar Holter, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter
Trivia: Considering the credits on this track, it’s no wonder it’s one of the best of the year. Mattman and Robin (Mattias Larsson and Robin Fredriksson) and Oscar Holter are part of Wolf Cousins, the new Swedish group of producers and writers founded and mentored by Max Martin and Shellback, which also includes Tove Lo, Ilya and Ali Payami among others. Meanwhile, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter have recently become some of the most sought-after pop writers, thanks to their 2015 success with Selena Gomez’s Good For You and Justin Bieber’s Sorry.
Best bits: 1. “I love ME!”
2. “Gonna love myself, no, I don’t need anybody else”
3. “Ah la la la, la la la la la-ah”

In June I excitedly wrote about Hailee Steinfeld, the teen actress and long-standing Friend of Taylor who had signed a record deal with Universal Republic. I had a good feeling about her pop star potential, and sure enough, her debut single Love Myself is definitely poptastic. It's simple but incredibly catchy, with a chorus that has been running around my head since I first heard it. There’s nothing unique or surprising about this radio-friendly, upbeat empowerment anthem, but its immaculate construction belies its origin… Sweden, of course! Love Myself was produced by Mattman & Robin, a duo who are part of Max Martin’s new young team Wolf Cousins, based in Stockholm. Wolf Cousins were collectively responsible for the two best pop albums of 2014, 1989 by Taylor Swift and Queen of the Clouds by Tove Lo (who is herself a member of the group). I’m following them closely to see who they’ll be making magic for this year, under the watchful eye of their super-talented mentor, and as Hailee herself is such a promising pop star, I’m hoping that her album will be their next masterpiece.

18-year-old actress Hailee Steinfeld is one of the stars of Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood video, and she may soon be asking her pop star friend to return the favour. Hailee’s currently working on her debut album, having recently signed to Republic Records in the US. She’s best known for her roles in True Grit (for which she got an Oscar and Bafta nomination) and Ender’s Game, and has modelled for brands such as Miu Miu. She discovered her singing talents in Pitch Perfect 2, and uploaded an acoustic version of Jessie J’s song from the soundtrack, Flashlight, to her YouTube channel. I find it fascinating to see how actors-turned-artists position themselves, and I think the singer-songwriter vibe that Hailee’s Flashlight cover suggests she’ll go for is a good choice. She’s already proven popular with a big teen fanbase, and if she takes any inspiration from Taylor on how to manage her music career and public image, she’ll certainly be one to watch.
