New Jersey girl SZA is so cool and cute that it feels like a wasted opportunity for her music to be so grown-up and dull. I know there is a market for this kind of music but, as with Rainy Milo and Jhene Aiko, I think if she went a little more commercial she could be a huge star. Her lovely summer release Julia was a step in the right direction, but it has a silly self-indulgent bit at the end, and she's back to boring with introspective new single Teen Spirit. SZA (real name Solana Rowe) is signed to Dr Dre's label Aftermath in partnership with TopDawg (home of Kendrick Lamar) so expect her to be featured on lots of upcoming rap releases.
